The belt hit the ground in front of the standards.
On 21 July 298, while the legion marked the emperor’s birthday with feasting and sacrifice, the centurion Marcellus stepped forward at Tingis. He ungirded his military belt, threw down his weapons and the vine staff that marked his rank, and said aloud that he was a soldier of Jesus Christ the eternal King and would no longer serve the emperors or worship their gods of wood and stone. The acts record the words. The soldiers who heard them arrested him on the spot.
The refusal was public because the claim was public. The feast required participation that he would not give. A household that has already assigned every remaining dollar to the next upgrade or the larger payment has already accepted the claim. There is nothing left on the ground to throw when the next demand arrives.
The vine staff was not decoration. It was the visible sign that Marcellus held the rank of centurion. Casting it down meant he no longer accepted the terms that came with it. Catholic teaching treats the duty to refuse cooperation with evil as real, not theoretical (CCC 1789, 1868). The household version is smaller and quieter: a surplus dollar that has not yet been promised to a new subscription or a higher car payment can still be refused when the demand appears. Once the promise is made, the refusal requires breaking something already in place.
Say a family of five has already set the tithe and the ordinary bills. A few hundred dollars remain. The decision that keeps the belt free is to leave that amount unassigned instead of letting the next recurring charge claim it in advance. When a job or a school or a relative later asks for something that would cost the household’s margin, the dollar is still available to answer without first undoing a prior commitment.
Marcellus was not executed that day. He was sent under guard to Tangier and stood before the deputy prefect on 30 October. He repeated the same confession. Agricolanus sentenced him to the sword. The acts say he blessed the judge as he was led away. The free hand had already been used on 21 July; the later cost did not change the earlier act.
I would rather the surplus stay unclaimed on an ordinary Tuesday than discover, the month a demand arrives, that every dollar already has a name. The belt is already on the ground when the need appears. The household that still holds an unassigned dollar can still refuse the next claim without first reclaiming the rank.
Throw the belt while the feast is still going.
