The dishes were still on the table when Jude asked.
Judas, not Iscariot, said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” (Jn 14:22, RSV-CE). The question comes after Jesus has spoken of the dwelling he and the Father will make with the one who loves him and keeps his word. Jude wants to know why the showing is reserved for the circle that already keeps the word, not for the city outside.
I read the question as a household problem. The world sees the car, the kitchen remodel, the vacation photo. It does not see the transfer that never left the account, the upgrade that was refused, the hour that stayed free because the dollar stayed free. Those acts are the manifestation that does not require an audience.
Jesus does not promise a public sign. He answers that the one who loves him will keep his word, and then “my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him” (Jn 14:23). The dwelling is the result of the keeping, not a spectacle staged for the street. Catholic teaching places the same weight on the ordinary acts that form the household: the works of mercy are concrete, and the virtue of justice includes giving each what is due, including the family’s own future needs (CCC 2447, 2411).
Say a family of five has already set the tithe and the ordinary bills. A few hundred dollars remain unassigned. The world will not notice if that money stays in the brokerage or the emergency account. The household will notice when the next medical bill or the next vocation letter arrives and the cash is already there. The question Jude asked is answered by whether the keeping happened before the need appeared.
I prefer the surplus that never gets a name in the budget. Once it is labeled “kitchen fund” or “next phone,” it is already claimed. The unclaimed dollar is what lets the household answer a request that was not on last month’s list. You can see how long a higher savings rate keeps that dollar free by running the numbers at the savings-rate runway and then reading how Catholic families keep that margin without turning every refusal into a performance.
Jude’s question is still on the table. The world does not get the showing. The household that keeps the word in ordinary dollars already has the dwelling.
The showing is the keeping, not the announcement.
