Hey everyone,
On the Memorial of St. Helena, the empress who searched the Holy Land for the True Cross of Christ, Catholic families get a clear picture of what real freedom looks like.
Helena was already in her later years when she set out. She had power, resources, and comfort. Yet she used them to seek what lasts — the wood of the Cross — and to care for the poor with her own hands. She built churches, freed prisoners, and gave generously. The money and influence were tools, not the treasure.
St. Paul wrote, “But far be it from me to glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world” (Galatians 6:14). Helena lived that truth. She was free enough to leave the palace and dig in the dirt of Jerusalem because her life was not held hostage by possessions or anxiety.
That same freedom is what faithful financial independence creates for ordinary families. When the household has real margin — a deliberate gap between what comes in and what goes out — you stop living paycheck to paycheck. You stop saying “we can’t” to the things that matter most: time for prayer, open-handed giving, hospitality, and the quiet space to seek God first.
You do not need an empress’s fortune. You need the same intentionality Helena showed. Run the numbers once. Name the gap you want between earning and spending. Protect the tithe. Build the emergency fund. Then let the surplus grow quietly in low-cost investments while you stay free to seek what lasts.
The Cross is not found by people who are too busy protecting their lifestyle. It is found by people who travel light enough to look for it.
Financial freedom really is for everyone — including your family.
