Detachment Creates Real Freedom: Lessons from St. Alphonsus Liguori

Hey everyone,

Today the Church remembers St. Alphonsus Liguori — lawyer turned bishop, founder of the Redemptorists, and Doctor of the Church.

At sixteen he already held doctorates in civil and canon law. He built a successful career arguing cases. Then, after a painful loss in court and a clear interior call, he walked away from status, income, and the approval of the world. He placed his sword on the altar and gave the rest of his life to the poor and to moral theology that always preferred mercy.

St. Alphonsus later wrote that true happiness belongs to the one who “despises the things of the world and lives in continual conformity to the will of God.” That is not a call to reckless poverty. It is a call to freedom from the anxiety that money and reputation so easily produce.

What detachment looks like for a family on the path to FI

Most of us are not called to leave a law practice. We are called to the same interior movement: stop letting the next raise, the next house upgrade, or the next market swing define our peace. Financial independence is one practical way Catholic families create the margin that makes that detachment possible without neglecting the duty to provide.

  • Decide in advance what “enough” looks like for your household — housing, cars, activities — so lifestyle inflation never becomes the default.
  • Automate the boring high-leverage moves (retirement contributions, index-fund investing) so the numbers no longer demand daily attention.
  • Protect family presence: when you are with your spouse or children, the portfolio stays closed. Detachment is practiced in real time, not only in theory.
  • Keep a simple generosity line in the budget. Giving first is one of the fastest ways to loosen money’s grip on the heart.

Alphonsus left the courtroom so he could serve the abandoned. FI does not require the same dramatic exit. It simply removes the constant pressure that keeps many parents too anxious to notice the people God has already placed in front of them.

A system that frees mental energy

One practical help is automated investing that runs without daily decisions. Wealthfront handles the long-term plan and cash management so surplus can grow while you focus on the family and the work that actually matters. Set it once, then practice the detachment St. Alphonsus described:
