The hour was up. The computer stayed on for the list.
St. Carlo Acutis loved video games. He also limited himself to one hour a week. When the timer ended he closed the game and turned the same machine to the work that still mattered: a website that gathered Eucharistic miracles so other people could find the highway he had already taken.
“The Eucharist is my highway to heaven.”
He said that as a teenager who went to Mass every day and stayed for adoration. The computer was not a status object. It was the tool that stayed free after the hour. The list grew because the screen was not already promised to the next download or the next upgrade.
Most households do not lose the catalog to one big decision. They lose it to the subscription that auto-renews, the app that fills the quiet evening, or the upgrade that was bought because the money was already in the account. Nobody planned to erase the free hour. The hour was simply no longer free.
Carlo could open the site because the hour had not been claimed in advance. The same rule holds for a family. Surplus that is already spoken for cannot be given to a project, a parish need, or the quiet work that does not pay. The computer stays available only if something else is refused.
Pick the subscription or the habit that currently owns the free hour. Cancel or cap it for thirty days and write down what the hour is for instead. Not a grand project. One list, one letter, one hour of adoration that the screen no longer interrupts.
If you cannot see how much unclaimed time or money the household still has, run the gap before you promise the computer to another upgrade.
See how long the gap lasts →Carlo closed the game when the hour ended. The list of miracles kept growing because the machine was still free. The highway does not require a new device. It requires that something smaller is refused so the screen can stay open for what lasts.
Close the game while the computer can still do the work.
