Build Margin to Give Freely: Lessons from St. Pantaleon

Hey everyone — picture the moment the bill comes and somebody says: it’s covered. Today the Church remembers St. Pantaleon, the physician who treated the poor without taking any payment.

He is one of the anargyroi, the “unmercenary” saints who refused silver for their care. When persecution came he gave away everything he owned and faced death rather than deny Christ. His feast is a quiet challenge to Catholic families building financial independence: the goal is not just to stop needing a paycheck, but to gain the freedom to give time, skill, and resources without calculating the return.

The unmercenary economy

St. John Chrysostom once told his flock:

“The rich man is not the one who has much, but the one who gives much. For what he gives away remains his forever.”

FI is one of the most practical ways a household can obey that teaching. When income reliably exceeds expenses and the surplus is invested simply, a family slowly gains the ability to serve without the constant pressure of “Will this cost us the mortgage?” That is the same freedom Pantaleon lived when he treated the poor for free.

Practice the no-silver habit

  • Identify one recurring expense that rarely brings peace or joy. Reduce or eliminate it and redirect the difference toward investing or a quiet act of generosity.
  • Once this week, do something useful for a neighbor or parishioner and refuse any repayment — even a meal. Practice the “no silver” habit in miniature.
  • Keep the investing automatic. Broad index funds need almost no attention, which leaves attention free for the people God has actually placed in front of you.

Pantaleon did not wait until he was rich to start giving. He ordered his life so that giving was possible. Catholic families on the path to FI are doing the same work: creating margin so generosity can become a normal, unforced part of household life.

Give on purpose, not at tax time

If you want a clean way to practice planned giving without scrambling at tax time, Daffy is a donor-advised fund built for families. You can contribute when cash is available, invest it, and then grant it out to the charities and causes you care about — including your parish — whenever you are ready. It turns generosity into a steady habit instead of a last-minute scramble:

Use whatever system helps your family give consistently. The point is the same one Pantaleon lived: free the heart so the hands can open.

Give without silver — the wealth you give away is the wealth that stays yours.
